For months, we've known that arthouse shelters Skydance Pictures and Annapurna Pictures and big studio Paramount have had an eye to reboot the "Terminator" franchise with a new standalone trilogy before the rights reverted back to James Cameron. Arnold has talked openly about returning in some capacity, and there was even a date, June 26 in the very busy summer of 2015.
Now the studios have announced that they know who will lead battle of humans versus machines.
Alan Taylor, the director who made a name for himself bringing Westeros to life for HBO's "Game of Thrones" and who is making the jump to tentpole films with "Thor: The Dark World," will helmed the first installment of the new "Terminator" trilogy.
Variety has the exclusive on the news, which also mentions a few of the other filmmakers that came close to making the movie. "Life of Pi" director Ang Lee is named as an early contender, while fan-favorite and "Looper" director Rian Johnson was considered as well, along with "Prisoners" director Denis Villeneuve.
Taylor's hiring should come as a relief to fans hungry for some solid information, as all they've had to go off of were sketchy rumors from places like Examiner.com. The site claimed that Dwayne Johnson is wanted to play the Terminator that is sent to the 40s or 50s to assassinate Sarah Connor's parents and that Arnold would play a human that protects them and serves as the inspiration for the T-800.
The next "Terminator" film is currently scheduled to open on June 26, 2015.
