If we learned anything from last night's VMAs, it's that everyyyything is different this year. *NSYNC's all grown up, Miley's about the twerk and tongue these days, and Drake and Kanye are...nature guys???
+ Watch Drake Perform "Hold On, We're Going Home" at the VMAs.
While Miley's performance was OTT as promised ("Over the top," for those of you who still use proper English), Drizzy's first-ever live performance of "Hold On, We're Going Home" started on a calm note, with a live reenactment of the cover artwork for his upcoming album, Nothing Was the Same. The cover features artist Kadir Nelson's take on a younger and current day Drake, posing against a blue, cloudy backdrop. 'Cause "Hold On, We're Going Home" is obvi about carpooling to and from school, work, and awards shows to save the environment. You only live once, and so does the ozone layer! Y-OZONE-LO!
+ Watch Kanye perform "Blood On The Leaves" at the VMAs.
And then there was Yeezy, who performed "Blood On The Leaves" in front of a big a** tree. Maybe naming his daughter North West turned Kanye into something very common in the Northwest: a tree hugger. Or maybe we should stick with MTV News' explanation, which is that the artwork, titled "Lynching Tree," is a "a photographic still by British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen that embodies dark historical themes of 'Blood on the Leaves.' The tree -- located somewhere near New Orleans -- once served as a gallows for slaves, and buried near underneath it are lynched victims, according to the Schaulager museum in Basel, Switzerland, where the piece hangs." Heavy. But what else did you expect from the man who named his album Yeezus?!
