The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards nominees have been announced, and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" is in the running for Video of the Year. The heart-on-her-sleeve singer is happy to be nominated, but she also had another point to make.

Yup, it's true — she's running against Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Wanz, Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell. All guys. While it sounds like Taylor is being tongue-in-cheek in her Tweet, Girl Power is serious business, and so is standing up for women's rights. One Billion Rising got celebs and women's rights activists mobilized over the fact that one in three women is beaten or sexually assaulted during her lifetime. Malala shows us the importance of girls' access to education, because there are currently 57 millions kids out of school, and a good chunk of them are girls. Elizabeth Banks recently Tweeted about politicians' attacks on women's reproductive rights, and her gratitude for State Senator Wendy Davis for standing up for these rights.

There's a lot to be angry about in the way many women are treated. But we also see strides forward as women (and men!) stand up for equality and feminist ideals. The majorly positive responses to One Billion Rising, Malala, and Wendy Davis show that people are all about Girl Power. In 2013 Taylor's representing women in the Video of the Year category, and you can represent women the world over by standing up for their rights each and every day.
