There's been an odd perception shift over the directing job for "Star Wars: Episode VII." At first, the gig seemed like any filmmakers dream. "Star Wars" birthed a generation of directors. Everyone working in Hollywood would probably kill to take a crack at that bad boy. Right?

So we eagerly waited for a director to come forward, and as we did, bigger and bigger names took their hat out of the ring. Well, of course Joss Whedon can't director. He's a little busy. They'll find someone else easily. Right?

But then people started coming out of the woodwork announcing that they straight-up turned Lucasfilm in Disney down. J.J. Abrams couldn't bring himself to do it. Brad Bird reportedly chose his mysterious "1952" over it, and now Guillermo del Toro tells The Playlist that he is just too busy.

Though it was not an outright offer, according to del Toro, Lucasfilm started a conversation. "We got one phone call to my agent saying, 'Is Guillermo interested?' And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I'm pursuing stuff that I'm generating already..."

Before you get too let down, it doesn't sound like there was ever much serious consideration on del Toro's part. "It was just a phone call, it didn't go past that, it was very nice to be asked, but believe it or not, I'm busy enough."

While he was talking "Star Wars," del Toro even offered up his vote for director. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like he'll get his wish. "I think the fans deserve somebody that is just going to immerse themselves completely. As a geek, I would have loved to see Brad Bird take it," he said.

At this point, shouldn't we just let the Pixar computers direct "Star Wars"? That seems way more reliable.
