Let the music unite us! Music Unites got up and running three years ago in New York City with the goal of inspiring teens through music, especially teens in underserved areas. The org's been so successful that it's now extended into Los Angeles!
Back when it was getting started, MU got a bunch of students together in a studio to create the Young Audiences New York Music Unites Youth Choir. After collaborating with partners like Rolling Stone magazine, MU made five after-school choir programs.
Now it's gone across the country to L.A. where it got its first after-school guitar program going at Centennial High School. And did I mention it's free?! In fact, the people attending got free guitars! Warner Brothers Records gave them an educational workshop called "Be Your Own Muse" to teach them more about the music business.
It might sound too good to be true, but it's not, and Music Unites will hopefully get even bigger and better. Classes to learn music aren't always available in schools these days, and some instruments can be super expensive. But MU explains that it's "dedicated to bringing music education to underprivileged children in underfunded inner city school systems." It's also getting support from established musicians, including special performances from the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Lianne La Havas and Lady Gaga's BFF Shiny Toy Guns. If Music Unites continues to get support, maybe someday they'll show up at your school...because you wouldn't mind getting a free guitar, would you? Get involved with MU below!
