Prepare to see Alan Rickman as you've never seen him before.
The con is on in the new international trailer for "Gambit," and Rickman's character (the richest man in all of England) is the one who's going to be screwed over by it. Fortunately, it seems as though he more than deserves the scam. As multi-billionaire Lord Shabandar, Rickman is willing to take it all off and it seems like he had a blast doing it. After years of seeing him as the cold Severus Snape, it's fun to see him let loose a little in a villain role.
It's also nice to finally see him paired up with Colin Firth. Firth plays Harry Deane, the slighted employee of Shabandar who comes up with a plan of revenge to get back at him. It involves an illegal painting, a cowgirl played by Cameron Diaz and apparently a lot of finding oneself pantless. We're not sure what Shirley MacLaine and Michael Cane (stars of the original 1966 "Gambit") would think of all the penis jokes here, but at least this version of "Gambit" seems to be similar in spirit to their film.
Though Michael Hoffman ("The Last Station," "A Midsummer Night's Dream") directed Gambit, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the screenplay so it still has some of their signature stamp on the project. We have a feeling that the movie won't actually be as silly as the trailer makes it seem, judging by the range of talent involved.
"Gambit" is due in theaters in 2013.
