Thanks to Rock The Vote, there's a bevy of musical badasses who are putting their pop power behind this year's youth voter push. It's a democratic get-down you really don't wanna miss! Founded to combat musical censorship back in the early 90s (their OG Madonna ads are PRICELESS for her accent alone), Rock The Vote has now grown into the biggest non-partisan voter registration org in America. It's all about young people having a say in who runs this country (Beyonce has already cast her vote) and 2012 is gonna be no different.
Partnering with national and community organizations, technology companies, college campuses, artists and a little media network known as MTV, RTV plans to boost youth turnout by registering a whopping 1.5 million new voters. And they've enlisted some big name ambassadors to help turn up the volume on this year's campaign: Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5, Nas, Jason Derulo, Kat Graham, Ke$ha and Keri Hilson, who was on hand yesterday when RTV announced its big goal.
And don't think they're stopping at just rocking. In response to the totally blown up electronic dance music (EDM) scene, RTV has teamed up with Insomniac Events (the superbass team who put on Electric Daisy Carnival and other electronica extravaganzas) to launch Spin The Vote -- a new youth voter drive rolling out at packed EDM festivals across the country. So if you're more Kaskade than Ke$ha, this is the registration route for you -- fight for your right to dance!
Speaking of throwing down, we just might have a ballot battle on our hands, people. voting restrictions in states like Florida, Texas, and Wisconsin are causing even more potholes on the road to the polling place – especially when it comes to college students, election virgins, minorities and senior citizens. RTV is fighting back and over at Power of 12, we've been asking a scary question throughout this election cycle: Is there a war on voting?
Well, it's a good thing we've got an army. Millennials make up nearly one quarter of the entire electorate in 2012, so when we decide to put an issue on blast, it gets HEARD. Occupy Wall Street, Arab Spring, the PIPA and SOPA protests – all these movements proved that the power of the people is a potent force in politics. And there's 45 MILLION young voices, so think of the noise we can make in this year's election! Rock the Action below and let's get this political party started!
