Brr, it's cold outside, baby! But instead of staying warm inside, people from the Coney Island Polar Bear club and Ice Breakers club dove into the ocean by Coney Island...for Sandy relief.
Most people wouldn't want to jump into the cold water right now (Who here is also shivering just thinking about it?) but each year people involved with the Polar Bear Club take the dive. And this year there's extra reason. Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY and the area around it was badly hit by Hurricane Sandy. So if you're going to dive, why not dive for a good cause?
The extra do-gooder incentive might have gotten out more people than the Polar Bear Club and co. would have gotten otherwise. A few hundred people took part, and the temperature was in the thirties ...which meant the water temperature was even colder than that! People typically wore bathing suits for the dive (sooo cold just thinking about it), and then hurried back onshore.
So this leads to a super important question. Would you be willing to dive into a cold, winter ocean for charity? Some people do it for fun, or on a dare, but how about doing it for a really good cause? What charity would you do it for? There's still lots to be done for Sandy relief, and props to the awesome people of Coney Island, who have come up with an original and creative way to raise funds!
