Every American is supposed to be able to vote, and jaws dropped around the country earlier this year when the Supreme Court took out Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, thereby making it easier to deny citizens the right to vote. John Legend has teamed up with the NAACP to say "Oh Hell No" to voter discrimination.

The NAACP, a.ka. the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is the oldest and biggest civil rights org in the nation, and it's dedicated to ending racism. "In striking down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act there is no longer a mechanism in place to prevent states with a history of voter discrimination from enacting harmful election laws before they impact voters," the NAACP explained. "Communities of color, young people, women, elderly, and disabled voters are at risk."

Basically, states can make up reasons to keep citizens from voting, and John and the NAACP want to put a stop to that before we see how much damage can be done. Congress has the power to restore the Voting Rights Act, and John's got a petition you can sign, asking them to get on it.

John couldn't have said it better when he explained, "It is maddening to know that there are some who would enact legislation that limits the ability of some Americans to exercise their right to vote. . . All of our leaders should seek to have inclusive elections that reflect the true will of the people, no matter who they intend to vote for. The politics of exclusion are unacceptable. It's time for all of us who believe in democracy and equal rights to take a stand."
