Last week Kerry Washington Tweeted her dismay over Russia's new anti-LGBTQ laws. As you might expect, well, know, Lady Gaga is also appalled by the laws, and now she's gone on Twitter to share her feelings.
Mother Monster started by saying:
Sending bravery to LGBTs in Russia. The rise in government abuse is archaic. Hosing teenagers with pepper spray? Beatings? Mother Russia?
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) August 5, 2013
She was getting more passionate by her next Tweet:
The Russian government is criminal. Oppression will be met with revolution. Russian LGBTs you are not alone. We will fight for your freedom.
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) August 5, 2013
People in Russia can now be arrested for saying anything about LGBTQ people and rights if their words have the chance of being overheard by minors. Well, Gaga talks a lot about LGBTQ people and their rights, and a good portion of her fans are minors. She did talk about LGBTQ rights while performing in Russia, and she reported that she was threatened with arrest. So Gaga Tweeted:
Why didn't you arrest me when you had the chance, Russia? Because you didn't want answer to the world? — Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) August 5, 2013
People have been thrown in jail for disobeying Russia's anti-LGBTQ laws, but it sounds like Lady Gaga is aware what sort of bad publicity and international coverage there would be if officials tried to arrest her for just talking. Arrest or not, talking about LGBTQ rights can still land a singer in hot water — there was even an attempt to make a $10.5 million lawsuit against Madonna for breaking anti-LGBTQ laws at a St. Petersburg concert.
Russia is experiencing increasing demand to change its laws, and there have been calls to boycott the country for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. What will happen is yet to be seen, but in the meantime, Lady Gaga sends her love to LGBTQs in Russia. . . and so do millions of other people.
