I recently hit the red carpet for MTV Act at the 2013 Do Something Awards, where celebrities and activists come together to celebrate all of the good they do in the world. Check out what a few familiar faces had to say!
From animal rescue to anti-bullying, all of the celebs at the Do Something Awards came out to rep their favorite causes. "Mellisa and Joey" actress Taylor Spreitler wants to give a voice to those who don't have one: animals. "Twisted" hottie, and totally my red carpet crush, Avan Jogia, wants more of us to step in when we see someone being bullied. "If someone is being bullied for being gay," he says, "and you're sitting by and you disagree ... and you say nothing, you're just as bad as the bully." Call me biased, but I think "Awkward" star Jillian Rose Reed said it best when she noted, "Anything that a young person is about is what they should get involved in."
So maybe I cheated on the Do Something Awards by talking about the VMAs, but it was totally relevant, guys, 'cause I was asking celebs about their favorite music videos with a message. Every year, the Best Video With A Message category honors one artist whose video breaks boundaries, inspires change, or highlights an important social or political issue. This year's nominees are fierce, but if celebrities can predict the future, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Same Love" just might win the Moonman!
As much as we love celebs, the real highlight of the Do Something Awards was the 5 inspiring young activists vying to win $100,000 for their causes. Daniel Maree won the grand prize for starting the Millionhoodies Movement for Justice -- a digital campaign that made the Trayvon Martin case go viral, so to speak. Maree's work just goes to show that huge movements can start with a simple click. Follow the action links below to Do Something positive today.
