When it was announced that a follow-up to last summer's hit comedy "21 Jump Street," starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, would be called "22 Jump Street," a lot of people assumed that the team behind the movie was just having some fun, but as directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained at San Diego Comic-Con, the title has some real meaning for the new story.
"[The undercover program] moves across the street," Lord said. "They got more money for the Jump Street program, and they could have an even cooler office with flat screens. It's a different abandoned church, across the street from the first abandoned church, but way nicer."
Click past the jump to learn more about the sequel, including whether we'll see another cameo on the scale of the Johnny Depp surprise.
With Hill, Tatum, and Ice Cube all slated to return when "22 Jump Street" opens in theaters on June 13, 2014, we got to wondering who else might return from the original film, a question the directing duo is not quite ready to answer. "I don't think we can say just yet, but yes," Miller said, before elaborating on where the story will take us this time. "[Jenko and Schmidt] are going to college, and we're delving deeper into their relationship. As the first one was them getting together, this is their marriage."
Production is expected to start soon, and while the script is constantly changing, Lord and Miller say they would not be making this if they weren't sure of the quality of the screenplay. "The script is always changing, obviously. We're working with Jonah right now on it," Miller said. "We didn't sign onto it until we were convinced it was going to be really good, and we've been waiting and waiting and waiting. About a month ago, we were finally like, 'It's going to be good.' "
One big talking point coming out of the first movie was, of course, Depp's surprise cameo at the end, and for "22 Jump Street," the directors say you should expect a comparable surprise. "We're certainly exploring options, trying to figure out what would be as fun as that," Lord said. "It's awesome to have in your hip pocket this amazing surprise, so we're hoping to find a way, whether it's some amazing casting thing or some cool story surprise. We're trying to make it feel as fresh as the first one."
"22 Jump Street" opens on June 13, 2014.
