The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are weeks away, and -- for the first time ever -- the Moonman has ditched his LA digs for a hip spot in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn is a breeding ground for art and creativity, so we decided to honor some great Brooklyn-based orgs reppin' that do-good life! This week we set our sights on what else? Art + Music!
+ FOKUS
FOKUS is all about bringin' the people of BK together with music and art-based web content and events, and they've done so with the help of celebs like John Legend, Lupe Fiasco, and Janelle Monet. It is the org's belief that the "fokus" required to complete any art piece can also be applied to an artist's everyday life. Check out their web mag, Insight, for some major artistic inspiration, and to read up on other up-and-coming creative folks.
+ Brooklyn Music School
As more and more school arts programs are lost to budget cuts, the Brooklyn Music School continues to offer low-cost and free music, dance, and theater classes to at-risk BK youth. BMS impacts more than 2,000 people annually, with a focus on those "whose artistic voices are least often heard."
+ Brooklyn Academy Of Music
The Brooklyn Academy Of Music has hosted programs in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and more for over 150 years! BAM also offers youth summer programs, after school programs, and college scholarships to talented
alumni. It is the org's goal to connect everybody, everywhere, through the power of art, and to make it accessible to all people, regardless of what borough, city, state, or nation they live in.
Follow the action links below to get artsty, and don't forget to catch the 2013 VMAS, Sunday, August 25th, at 9/8c on MTV.
