Many people are waiting to hear how the Supreme Court decides on same-sex marriage, but not everyone realized that until recently people of different races could have trouble marrying in America. Loving v. Virginia changed this on June 12, 1967, and today the Loving Day Project enjoys its tenth annual Loving Day celebrations.
Back when Barack Obama's parents got married, interracial marriage was illegal in 22 of the states. *picks jaw up from floor* These days one in seven weddings going on have an inter-racial couple, and multiracial children are a growing demographic. Loving Day is about celebrating the rights of couples to marry whom they love and for families to thrive. It's also a day about education and taking a stand against prejudice. You can also use Loving Day (I can't get over how perfect that name is) to learn more about your own family's cultural history.
A number of celebrations are going to be going on today and through the weekend. New York City's celebration is gonna take place this Saturday, and 1,500 guests are anticipated to take part. If that's how it goes it will be the biggest event for Loving Day, but that doesn't mean there might not be other awesome events in your area. If you're currently attending college, it might interest you to know that the Loving Day Project has also started up something called Loving Day on Campus to get more university students involved. Let's sharte a little love today!
