April 4th marked the 45th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In his honor, the King Center in his hometown of Atlanta has launched the "50 Days of Nonviolence" campaign to challenge students to abstain from violence for the rest of the school year.
2 Chainz recently hopped on board with the promo video below. "The choice is no longer between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or nonexistence," MLK Jr. once said. Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, he promoted a nonviolent approach to activism.
In 2011, 12% of high school students reported being in a physical fight on school property within the past year. 160,000 students skip school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. These stats would deeply sadden a man who devoted his life to preaching nonviolence -- and if he were still alive, I'm sure MLK Jr. would have something to say about the Internet, too! Digital abuse can be just as painful as physical abuse, and should totally be a part of the "50 Days of Nonviolence" challenge.
Kelly Rowland and Common have also joined the nonviolent movement! Do the same by Tweeting @KingCenterATL to let 'em know you accept the #50DaysNonviolence challenge. Heck, why not go for a lifetime?!
