According to statistics, every two minutes, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. That means that, on average, there are more than 200,000 victims of sexual assault every year. Now is the time to talk about it!
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which means people all over the country are speaking out against sexual violence. The stats above are believed to be low estimates, believe it or not, because as many as 54% of all assaults are not reported to the police. The numbers might be scary, but we can all do our part to help raise awareness and support survivors.
Thankfully, there are tons of organizations working tirelessly to help survivors cope with their assaults. Here are four ways you can lend your voice and time to the cause this April.
+ Get the Facts
In order to get involved, you're going to need all the facts. RAINN, the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network, has a list of statistics and resources on the site that will get you started. Power up on some knowledge so that you'll be able to empower others and help raise awareness.
+ Tell Your Story
If you're a survivor of sexual violence and feel comfortable sharing your story, check out Project Unbreakable. Fair warning, some of the posts might be triggering. Thanks to Grace Brown, survivors have been able to tell their stories by holding up posters with quotes from their assaults.
+ Help RAINN Help Survivors
Just $10 helps RAINN connect with one survivor. If you can give up two or three expensive coffee drinks this month, you've easily saved the money! If you can't donate right now, you can still help spread the word. Log on to your Twitter or Facebook account and share resources.
+ Volunteer
Call your local rape crisis center or women's shelter to see if they need volunteers. You can train to answer incoming calls or help out around the centers in other ways. Find a crisis center near you.
If you need to talk to someone right now, you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). You can also find help online via the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.
