30 Seconds to Mars has a new album due out in the near future, but that doesn't mean the band is forgetting the past. In an exclusive video below, Jared Leto tells MTV Act what they learned from filming "Artifact."

For those of you not in The Echelon (the band's incredible fan army), here's what you need to know. The band was famously sued for $30 million by their former label, Virgin Records, a few years ago while working on their album, This Is War. During the intense few months that followed, Leto directed "Artifact," a documentary chronicling the band's struggles.

In our interview below, Leto opens up about the documentary, which took home the People's Choice Award from the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

The biggest thing the band learned from the lawsuit and from filming the documentary is that "it's important to fight for what you believe in. It's OK to do that. It's OK to fight."

As Leto notes, it was "a worthy battle" from the band because they "learned so much from that process." The lawsuit, while a "horrible, challenging, really dark time" ultimately gave the band This Is War, "an album that is really about survival."
