The other night I randomly turned on "American Idol." I don't remember any of the singers, but that's partly because I distracted by Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey's thinly veiled catfight. Shade was thrown, "Mean Girls" trivia was brought up…it wasn't pretty.
I couldn't believe that I was watching two talented and successful women behave in such a way. Regardless of whether or not it's a ploy to draw in more viewers and bump up ratings, I was pretty disheartened when I finally changed the channel.
Instead of adding to the conversation about how girls can't be anything other than each other's competition, I wanted to make a list of girls to look up to: celebrity BFFs who prove having real friends is so much better than having frenemies.
+ Selena Gomez & Taylor Swift

+ BFF Quote: "It's nice just to be able to pick up the phone and be like, 'Ugh, I had this person say this and it's annoying,' and have someone understand and really get what you're going through." - Selena about her friendship with Taylor
+ Why they're legit: Ever since they met at a Jonas Brothers concert back a few years ago, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have been a constant in each other's lives. They're together at awards shows, occasionally baking cupcakes at Taylor's house and have seen each other through more than a few bad breakups. Selena even chose to sing Taylor's "I Knew You Were Trouble" hit at a benefit for UNICEF recently. These two prove that girls in the same industry can succeed without catfights or cutthroat behavior.
+ Snooki & JWOWW

+ BFF Quote: Snooki: "We'll definitely be friends 50 years from now."
JWOWW: "Probably sharing the same room in the nursing home, talking about the days at the Shore..."
+ Why they're legit: Their days on the Shore may be behind them, but Snooki and JWOWW 's friendship isn't a thing of the past. These best friends know know each other so well that they admit to having inside jokes and secret facial expressions. If these two can survive multiple reality TV shows all while making time to give back to their favorite causes, we think they can make it through anything. Here's to many more seasons -- and years of friendship -- for our fave guidettes.
+ Tina Fey & Amy Poehler
Photos: (Getty)
+ BFF Quote: Amy on her early friendship with Tina: "She's the same way back then as she is now, which is really, really funny and incredibly hard-working and a very supportive and loyal friend. But she was a lot less rich. That was the only difference: she was like 100 percent less rich."
+ Why they're legit: Did you watch Tina and Amy host the Golden Globes? Did it look as if they'd been working together forever? If you thought so, you weren't wrong: the comedic dream team met at an improv class in Chicago in 1993! OK, maybe that is forever. Their best friendship has seen them through many a Saturday night in New York, primetime slots on a major network and even a movie about girls who were anything but BFFs. But this duo doesn't horde their knowledge: they even auctioned off their friendship to fight Autism last year.
+ Dakota Fanning & Kristen Stewart

+ BFF Quote: Explains Dakota about her gurl, Kristen: "We're homebodies ... She cooks for me. She loves to cook. I go to her house. Certainly there are times it's crazy, but we're also just friends."
+ Why they're legit: They've been vampires, they've been runaways, they've been…BFFs: so goes the history of Dakota Fanning's and Kristen Stewart's friendship. While the two powerhouse actresses command major Hollywood attention, Dakota and Kristen know what's most important: staying loyal to your best friend, no matter what. Here's hoping for less focus on their romances and more on their work, whether it's on the silver screen or for a good cause. The "Twilight" movies may be over, but we think Dakota and Kristen's friendship is going to be eternal.
+ Ashley Benson & Lucy Hale

+ BFF Quote: "When Lucy told me she was moving to L.A., I invited her to my friend's birthday party at Disneyland. We decided to meet there for the first time ever. But I didn't tell my mom that I met her on MySpace, and she didn't tell her mom either. And we just clicked, and from that day on, we were best friends." - Ashley Benson
+ Why they're legit: It sounds like an episode of "Catfish" waiting to happen, but Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale's friendship actually began on MySpace. Although they've been best friends since that first meeting almost a decade ago, the two were reunited when they were cast as BFF's with their fair share of secrets on ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars." Ashley and Lucy prove that girls can not only work together: they can build each other up too. They've landed fashion campaigns, taken home awards and even find time to give back. Seeing what these two have been through, we think they know where to keep any potential BFF drama: on the small screen with their Rosewood counterparts.
