Bimonthly, we'll take an artist on the rise on the MTV Music Meter and, to help you discover them a little more, detail some of their philanthropic tendencies -- from Mika to Ellie Goulding. This week: The Lumineers!
It's a shame that The Lumineers' "Ho Hey" didn't come out before my ex and I split, because it's the kind of song that could make enemies wanna hold hands and skip through fields of flowers together. Seriously. Put it on and try to be mad at something. It's impossible.
Aside from writing the feel-good song of the year, here are a few other reasons we love the folky band:
+ They play for charity
The band recently played a show in Nashville from which a portion of the ticket sales went to MusiCares, an organization devoted to helping struggling artists.
+ They've worked really hard to get where they are
Band mates Wesley, Jeremiah, and Neyla have been playing together for years. They've worked all the way up from grimy open mics to top 40 hits, all the while maintaining their modest and laid back hipster 'tudes. In an interview with Grammy.com, lead singer Wesley Schultz explained how the band has never had dreams of grandeur. "Sometimes that's how the healthiest things form," he said. "It's by not expecting things to last forever, and just going with it."
+ They wanna make you feel good
Whether it's a cool love song or a warm cold remedy, the Lumineers care about making you feel good. Just don't forget to brush, because not even the sweet allure of "Ho Hey" on the radio could make your date wanna taste that garlic breath.
