Music festival season has arrived! It's my favorite season of the year -- Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Daisy Carnival, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Electric Forest, the list goes on and on. With Coachella kicking off today (April 13), here are a few ways to stay green and clean as you dance the night away and do silly things that will forever be immortalized on the Internet. If only the hippies had Instagram.
+ Carpool to the festival.
Save on fuel, get there faster, and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. Surely, plenty of other "green gasses" will be floating around the festival....... so let's keep those emitted by our cars at a minimum.
Ever year, Coachella teams up with Global Inheritance for CARPOOLCHELLA. Carpool to the festival with 4 or more in your vehicle, and you could win VIP tickets to Coachella for life, all access guest passes, and more. All you have to do is write the word "CARPOOLCHELLA" on an 8x11 piece of paper, and place it on your dash. Secret spotters at festival parking and camping entrances will randomly select the winners.
+ Recycle.
Don't throw your beer cans, water bottles, and paper plates in the trash. Recycling bins are never hard to come by at music festivals. They are extremely easy to spot at Coachella, as they are always so beautifully painted by artists selected by the organizing committee. Not only do the bright colors help them stand out, but the stoners standing in awe in front of them are almost always a dead giveaway. This year, 50 recycling bins have been beautified for our eco-friendly efforts and viewing pleasures. To motivate festival attendees to stay green and hydrated, Global Inheritance is giving away a free bottle of water for every ten bottles/cans recycled. Also, a 20 foot Tyrannosaurus Rex will be roaming the festival grounds and gobbling up your empty containers.
+ Bring a refillable water bottle.
Although Global Inheritance's deal is tempting, be super green by bringing your own reusable water bottle to the festival. There will be plenty of water fountains/faucets at your disposal. If you're picky about your water sources, purchase a bottle with a built in filter to make your agua taste like it came fresh from a fluffy Antarctic rain cloud.
+ Glowsticks? There's an app for that.
Little can be done with our plastic, radioactive glow sticks after we've used 'em. Neither the plastic nor the chemicals that make them glow in the dark are eco-friendly. There are tons of glow stick applications in the Apple and Android app. stores. Download one onto your phone, and become the ultimate green raver. If you've just gotta have your glow sticks, try reusable battery operated or long-lasting LED alternatives such as Eco-Sticks.
+ Pack your own Plates & Utensils.
If camping at a music festival, bring your own reusable plates and utensils to avoid using Styrofoam and plastic. The last thing our landfills need is more sporks.
+ Carry condoms.
Things happen. I'm not judging. Just be safe and make sure nobody Tweets a photo of it later.
When attending music festivals, I choose to disregard all rules but one. I have dubbed this rule the CGR ("The Coachella Golden Rule"): What happens at music festivals ends up on Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, Tumblr, MySpace, and Instagram, but it should not end up in our landfills.
