Substance abuse is a serious issue many people face, and it can also affect their friends and loved ones. We're seeing that firsthand on "Teen Mom 3," as Matt, who is Arabella's dad and Alex's ex, struggles with addiction.
Previously on the show Matt was rushed to the hospital, and tonight's all-new episode confirmed that it was because he overdosed. Thankfully, Matt survived. Alex revealed to her mom that Matt's been taking heroin, a heavy-duty substance that's highly addictive and has the potential of killing its users. About one-fourth of people who try heroin end up addicted to it. After a person's taken it, withdrawal is so painful they might take more heroin just to feel better, and this continues the cycle.
Matt isn't in the episode much, and the fact he's missing out on his daughter Arabella's life is a sore point. In one scene he is on the phone with Alex, and he seems to be telling her that addiction is a disease. She agrees, and then says it's ultimately up to him to heal himself. When someone has a drug addiction it's not as easy as just saying, "Hey, cut that out, that isn't healthy for you." A person facing addiction must want to get help for it to work, and the good news is help is out there. During part of the episode Matt is in rehab, which is one way of handling an addiction. We hope he stays on the road to recovery.
