"Prison Break" star, Wentworth Miller, proudly has come out to the world as gay! While the coming out process is a little different for everyone, Wentworth made the announcement via a letter to the Russian government!.
After being invited to Russia for a film festival, the actor decided to pen a letter expressing his frustration with the current governments actions towards LGBT rights. Wentworth expressed, "As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline."
After President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing Russian police to arrest any tourist who they suspected as gay, we have only seen a downward spiral since. With the upcoming 2014 Olympics occurring in Russia, many celebs and public figures are calling on the boycott of the event. Andy Cohen even dumped a bottle of Russian vodka on his late night show, "Watch What Happens Live!" The always fabulous Sophia Bush Tweeted,
"For the record, I fully support our athletes. I think they are incredible people. I cannot, however, support Russia making a fortune off tourism from countries where human rights matter, during the Olympic Games. If we spend money there, we are virtually voting with our dollars, and saying, albeit silently, that we have no problem with the way they are treating their citizens. #EqualityMatters for ALL."
The laws implemented in Russia towards LGBT individuals are not only discriminatory, but very dangerous. Wentworth continued his letter by stating, "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."
We are so proud of Wentworth. It takes so much courage to come out. If you or someone you know if struggling in the coming out process, we highlight encourage you all to head to the Trevor Project. Trust me, I know just how hard it can be!
