+ Center For Anti-Violence Education
Photo: (Facebook) Members of the Center For Anti-Violence Education are given the tools to heal from, prevent, and counter violence. The center offers self-defense courses, with a focus on women, children, and the LGBTQ community. There are 1,400 reported hate crimes based on sexual orientation in the U.S. every year, and many more that go unreported. Homeless youth face an even greater risk of violence, as over 40% of NY's homeless population is LGBTQ. Check out one of the center's many self-defense programs if you're ever in BK, or donate to support their amazing work.
The 2013 Video Music Awards air August 25 on MTV and VMA.MTV.com, live from the Brooklyn Barclays Center. No sleep til Brooklyn!
