The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching, and we're particularly excited about this year's event because -- for the first time ever -- it's taking place in Brooklyn, NY! While the Moonman gets used to his NY digs check out these amazing Brooklyn-based organizations that deserve awards for animal rescue.
+ Brooklyn Badass Animal Rescue
Brooklyn Badass Animal Rescue is a network of rescuers, fosterers, and volunteers who "rescue badass dogs from idiot people." Since 2011, they've rescued more than 800 dogs from high-kill pounds in the rural south. Post-rescue, the dogs are taken to foster homes, where they are prepped for adoption. If you're a puppy lover, join the org by volunteering, fostering, or adopting your very own badass animal.
+ BARC

The Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) provides a safe haven for abandoned animals while seeking out loving, permanent homes. "Girls" creator and star, Lena Dunham, adopted her beloved Lamby from there. The BARC shelter is located in Williamsburg -- i.e. Brooklyn's hipster haven -- so every animal is also outfitted with a vintage scarf and non-prescription glasses. (Not really.) If you already have a pet, support BARC by purchasing from their pet supply store.
+ District Dog/Dog Habitat Rescue

District Dog is pretty much the sweetest pet shop ever, and allocates much of its resources to rescuing abandoned dogs. Buy your pup some Doggie Beer, then head over to their Dog Habitat Rescue to find your pet a drinkin' buddy!
Follow the action links below to become a badass animal rescuer, and don't forget to catch the 2013 VMAS, Sunday, August 25th, at 9/8c on MTV.
