April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, and Kelly Clarkson is bringing awareness to the fact that the Metro Animal Care & Control in Nashville puts to sleep 76% of the animals it gets in!
There's a petition online asking this to stop, and she's hoping you'll sign it. Ms. Clarkson Tweeted:
Please help Nashville! Lets show other cities how we are not only progressive but compassionate! The petition link: … say.ly/Nzl5vbj

The petition is directed toward the mayor of Nashville, and explains that last year at Metro Animal Care & Control (MACC) 1,211 animals were adopted, yet 7,179 were euthanized. But MACC has a budget of $1.7 million, so they have the money to make changes. The petition puts forward good ideas to get more animals adopted and bring down the alarming kill rate: Establish a Rescue Program, Establish a Volunteer Program, Stop Breed-Specific Policies and Euthanizations, and Raise Visibility of Impounded Animals.
Everyone can sign the petition, though sigs would be especially powerful if they're from the Nashville area. But dogs and cats being euthanized at shelters is not a problem confined to Nashville. According to the Humane Society, a shelter animal is put to sleep every eight seconds. As individuals, there are ways we can bring that number down. Fixing your pets is step one, because it helps curb the overpopulation problem. Adopting a shelter pet -- if you're able – is another biggie. You could also volunteer or donate to a shelter or animal rights group. Like Kelly, you can show the whole country you're not only progressive but compassionate.
