Halle Berry recently opened about spending over three decades in therapy. "I've done therapy on an as-needed basis since I was probably ten years old," confessed the 46-year-old beauty to UK's HELLO! magazine.
She added: "My father was an alcoholic and a very abusive one, and my mother knew the value of providing me with the outlet of an unbiased person to talk to, so I've done that all my life when times get stressful. It really helps me deal with stuff." This all just goes to show that everyone is prone to emotional struggle, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with speaking about it and seeking help.
Here are a few other celebs who have been open about going to therapy:
+ Victoria Beckham
When Vogue UK asked Victoria Beckham if she'd ever sought therapy, the former Spice Girl coolly replied, "Haven't most people at some time or another?" Vickie's chill response just goes to show that seeking help is nothing to be embarrassed about! Check out MTV's Half of Us for resources on dealing with depression, anxiety, breakups, and anything else that may be ailing you.
+ Catherine Zeta-Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones sought treatment for bipolar disorder in 2011. Upon leaving the facility, she told People, "This is a disorder that affects millions of people, and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help." There's also no shame in helping a friend in need. If you are seriously concerned about someone else's well being, contact your school's guidance center, a local mental health professional, or call 1-800-273-TALK.
+ Demi Lovato
Back in 2010, Demi Lovato sought help for physical and emotional issues at Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center. Demi hopes that being honest about her demons will inspire others to seek help for theirs. After revisiting Timberline Knolls to speak with current residents, she Tweeted, "Today I went back to the treatment center I went to last year, to speak to the beautiful women fighting their inner demons. Was so honored."
+ Robert Downey Jr.
Even Iron Man isn't strong all of the time! After years of drug and alcoholism that culminated in a 2001 arrest, Robert Downey Jr. checked into rehab. Since then, he has become one of the most inspiring comeback stories in Hollywood, starring in multiple major Blockbusters, including the upcoming "Iron Man 3."
+ Elton John
Contrary to popular belief, eating disorders don't affect women exclusively. In an interview with CNN, Elton John opened up about his battle with drugs, alcohol, and bulimia, saying, "It took me 16 years…to actually have the humility to say, 'I need help.' And as soon as I said those words, I knew I was going to get better."
If you need help, talking to someone can provide both an outlet and resource to get better. Halle, Victoria, Catherine, Demi, Robert, and Elton just go to show that asking for help is the most empowering thing a person can do!
