It's hard to believe, but a little over a decade has passed since Richard B. Riddick made his intergalactic debut in 2000's "Pitch Black." Ever since, the elusive sci-fi character has managed to garner enough appeal to be the center of a trilogy that includes 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick" and the forthcoming "Riddick," which just got its official release date.
Universal has confirmed that the third installment of David Twohy's series will open on September 6, 2013, making it one of a handful of sci-fi flicks scheduled for a 2013 release. In addition to playing in conventional theaters, the movie will also hit IMAX theaters nationwide.
With all of that said, we should also mention that Vin Diesel is reprising his role as Riddick, an infamous antihero type, who's been on the run since his introduction in "Pitch Black." This time around, he's left for dead on a lifeless, sun-scorched planet. And to make matters worse, Riddick is forced to fight for his survival against lethal alien predators.
Both director and star have been known to be passionate about the series, with Twohy having written and directed all three films and Diesel sharing posters and photos from the set on his official Facebook page. Most recently, in light of the release date news, the actor posted a photo of himself and Twohy with a comment: "IMAX…very cool, great job DT."
"Riddick" also stars Karl Urban, Dave Bautist, Jordi MollĂ and Katee Sackhoff, and hits theaters in September next year.
