The story of Olympian and WWII prisoner of war Louis Zamperini may finally find its way to the big screen thanks to Angelina Jolie, who plans to adapt the non-fiction book "Unbroken" as her second directorial effort.

Universal Pictures has been developing the project for 55 years, making the film nearly two decades older than its new director.

"I read Laura Hillenbrand's brilliant book, and I was so moved by Louie Zamperini's heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make this film," Jolie said in a statement announcing the movie. "Louie is a true hero and a man of immense humanity, faith and courage. I am deeply honored to have the chance to tell his inspiring story."

The movie is expected to start production sometime next year.
