Laura Jane Grace, the lead singer of the band Against Me! knows a thing or two about style, and as a woman who is transgender, she also knows the importance of acceptance. In the latest episode of MTV's House of Style Laura shows us her punky fashion sense, and also talks about being true to yourself.
She opens up about associating with females early in life, including looking at Madonna and thinking, "That's me." A few years ago she decided it was time to transition.
"There are so many moments in life where you feel guilt and you feel shame and all that, but you get to the point where you realize things aren't going to change," she says. "After you come out, and after you start talking about it, you kind of feel stupid for how long you haven't deal with the issue, because people have been so overwhelmingly supportive."
Laura's fans have def been super supportive, and so has her wife, Heather.
"I'm very happy with myself and I'm very comfortable with myself," Laura says.
A lot of the episode deals with clothing and shoe styles, and Laura says part of the reason she's in House of Style is because it's a way of giving back to others that are transgender who have helped her on YouTube and other places.
"When I was fourteen-years-old, if I was watching House of Style, watching a transsexual being interviewed and talking about that, then it would have completely changed my life," she says. "I would have felt saved."
If you're transsexual, transgender, or experiencing gender dysphoria, you're far from alone. Laura shows you can come out as your real self and live a totally happy, healthy life.
