Pakistani teen Malala Yousafzai made headlines in October when she was shot by the Taliban because of her activism for girls' education. Malala survived the attack, and the United Nations made November 10 Malala Day.
After being shot, it was unclear if the brave young activist would make it. Malala is currently in England, and not only did she pull through, she doesn't have any serious brain or nerve damage.
Making sure girls get an education is an important human rights effort that's going on across the globe. Malala began her activism for girls' education at the age of 11, after the Pakistani Taliban decreed that girls were not allowed to go to school. In some places, girls cannot afford to go to school, there are no schools nearby, or it is strictly frowned upon for girls to become educated. Malala and many others around the world say that every girl should have access to education, and YOU can help make that happen. The United Nations wants Malala Day to be a day for "Malala and the 32 million girls like Malala not at school."
You can sponsor a girl through She's the First to make sure she's able to get schooling. In fact, right now She's the First is doing a yummy tie-dyed cupcake bake-off to raise funds (and did you see their adorbs cupcake jewelry?). You can also help girls specifically in Pakistan, Malala's home country, by getting involved with Global Giving. Every day can be Malala Day, because every day girls deserve the same rights as everyone else.
