As far as celebrities go, no one comes close to Stephen Colbert's Tolkien fanaticism. (For further evidence, just watch this video of Colbert drop some knowledge on James Franco at the 4 minute mark.)
So that's why it couldn't be more appropriate that the leader of Colbert Nation will be making a cameo appearance in one of the "Hobbit" films. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed a rumor that Colbert began himself in the pages of Playboy.
"Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year," Colbert told the men's magazine. "I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations. I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I'm a big fan of the films."
When asked if he made it into the movie, Colbert replied, "Could be."
Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a while before seeing Colbert in his Middle-earth form. He will not be appearing in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," but one of the other two films. That means we'll have to wait until December 2013 at the very earliest.
There's no word yet on who Colbert will play when he does make his appearance, but we have our fingers crossed for an ethereal elf. That would suit him nicely.
