Katy Perry has sold millions of albums and will be honored with Billboard's Woman of the Year Award, but the birthday girl is also doing her part to change the world for the better. Today, on Katy's 28th birthday, we want to give a shout-out to three areas where this California Gurl is using her star power to make a diff.
+ LGBT Rights
When Katy first came out with "I Kissed a Girl" some people were a little unsure on her stance on LGBT rights. However, since then Katy's shown herself to be a major LGBT ally. Her pro-acceptance song "Firework" includes two men kissing, and she's spelled her views out clearly by saying, "I am a gay activist and I say that proudly...I've always been very open-minded person, but I definitely believe in equality."
+ Soldiers and Veterans
Katy's a big supporter of our armed forces and the women and men who risk their lives for our freedoms. We all remember her performing for sailors during Fleet Week last spring (you can't forget her American flag outfit). She could also sing a song called "I Kissed a Sailor" because she gave one lucky guy a kiss while performing at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. On top of that, she performed for the troops on "VH1 Divas" and has shown the power of women in the Marines (or just the power of women in general) with her music vid for "Part Of Me."
+ Election
It's election season (remember to voooote!) and Katy's def going to be heading to the voting booth this November 6. Katy's talked a bit about politics before, like saying she voted against California's Prop 8, which defined marriage as only between a man and a woman. This election year she's gotten behind President Obama, who also supports same-sex marriage. She's been performing for the prez in order to help get him fund raise, and she even got her nails done with his picture on them. Now that's Katy Perry fashion gone political!
Happy birthday, Katy! Thanks for doing all you do, boo.
