Today is John Lennon's birthday and John's widow, Yoko Ono, is also using the day to give the LennonOno Grant for Peace to five activists, including Lady Gaga!

This is happening in Iceland today, and Lady Gaga will be there to receive the award in person. Yoko is way impressed with Mother Monster, and explained, "Lady Gaga is one of the biggest living artists of our time. She is not only an artist, she is also an activist, using her art to bring better communication to the world. She is being acknowledged for her activism, and how her album Born This Way has widely changed the mental map of the world. And how it has made us deal with the future world, which happens to be here already."

Along with getting this high honor, Gaga will receive a charitable donation that she said she is going to give to the Elton John AIDS Foundation to help disadvantaged young people fight HIV infection in America.

Peace activist Rachel Corrie, who died in 2003 at age 23 during a nonviolent protest, will be honored posthumously. After she was killed, the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice was created. The foundation explains that it "encourages and supports grassroots efforts in pursuit of human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice, which they view as pre-requisites for world peace." And if you want to be technical, more than five people are winning the award this year, because Pussy Riot as a group is also one of the winners. The more the merrier, right? Peace out!
