Last Friday night was the Stand Up To Cancer telethon, a star-studded event that played on multiple channels in order to raise money for cancer research. Justin Timberlake, who Tweeted about the event beforehand (and was also part of it!) gave us another SU2C Tweet that included an update on how much money was raised.
The "Sexy Back" singer Tweeted:
Amazing! Stand Up To Cancer Has Raised $81 Mill and counting! #istandupfor @su2c Donate: bit.ly/S4IP9d-teamJT

Did Justin's mention of 81 milli make you do a double take? That's not a typo -- since Friday, night more than 81 million dollars has been raised! People tuned in, people Tweeted #istandupfor, and people donated enormously. It was an epic evening, as our own MTV Act editor Alexis Tirado found out by attending in person. She saw Taylor Swift's performance of "Ronan" (about a four-year-old boy who lost his battle to neuroblastoma last year) and learned stats from celebs, like Justin's beau Jessica Biel saying, "Every 3 and 1/2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer." Every three and a half minutes, really?
There are other numbers that show us that the fight against cancer sure isn't over, like the fact that one in two men and one in three women will get some kind of cancer during their lifetimes. The big C is a scary diagnosis, and Stand Up To Cancer is funding research for new treatments and cures so that word doesn't have to be so scary. Justin is more than justified keeping the fight against cancer going strong.
