This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and today is none other than World Suicide Prevention Day. There are ways you can help raise awareness of this important issue. See below for simple steps you can take to spread the word. And remember, if you are feeling depressed or you know someone who is, there is help.
+ To Write Love On Her Arms Tumblr
To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a group out there to help people dealing with issues like depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. They recently put together a survey about the stuff they handle, and while the survey is closed, they're going to be talking about their results on their tumblr throughout the week. Check it out and get a dialogue going!
+ It's T-Shirt Time
Like to wear your thoughts on your shirt? To Write Love on Her Arms is selling a $20 T-shirt in conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Week. The shirt says "To Write Love On Her Arms" in orange. Rock it to bring awareness to the issue.
Of course TWLOHA is on Twitter, and this week they're asking you to Tweet up a frenzy to bring awareness. Today, you can Tweet @TWLOHA with the hashtag #WSPD12. Tomorrow World Suicide Prevention Day will be over, but National Suicide Prevention Week is still going strong, so you can Tweet with the hashtag #NSPW12. You can also Tweet pics, which brings us to the next action!
+ Uploading pics with TWLOHA shirts
Got your shirt? Awesome! Ready to use the hashtag I just talked about? Sweet. If you get the shirt, you can Tweet pics of yourself wearing it and please use the hashtag #WSPD12. You can also upload pics of yourself in the gear to your Facebook page so your friends will learn what's going on. Maybe one of your friends is struggling with depression and this will give them the courage to speak up.
+ Find Help
This is a big one. If you or someone you know is feeling depressed or is having thoughts of suicide, there are ways to get help. Start by learning about the warning signs of suicide and if you need more info, check out Half of Us for tips and resources. You can also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. Remember, you are not alone.
