As many people have said, 9/11 is a day that we'll "never forget." It's a tragedy that has affected many of us. We know people who died that day or went to school with friends who lost their parents, siblings or loved ones. And whether you were 10 or 60, EVERYONE knows where they were on 9/11. While we'll never forget, we also want to give back. So on this somber 11th anniversary, we have five ideas to remember on 9/11.
+ Join The 9/11 Day Movement
People, overcome by shock and hurt, banded together to help one another through that tragic day in September of 2001. The 9/11 Day Movement wants to increase the caring and connectedness part of the tragedy and it encourages people to do charitable deeds. Its mission statement explains that they want to "remind people of the importance of working more closely together in peace to improve our world." So join the 9/11 movement today.
+ Volunteer
Want to do volunteer work, but you're not sure what? Check out Idealist, which currently has info on more than 15,000 volunteer opportunities. Even if you can't volunteer today, you could still do something later this week or this month to honor those we lost on September 11.
+ Visit The 9/11 Memorial
If you're close enough, you can visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York City. A commemoration ceremony is going to take place there today, starting at 8:30 in the morning, with many people attending to pay their respects. If you're not close enough to attend or not able to otherwise, you can still donate $10 to the Memorial by texting HOPE to 80088.
+ Quilt It
Have you decided what random act of kindness you're going to do for September 11? You can share it at 9/11 Day Movement's special online quilt. Whether it's thanking a firefighter or helping a parent with laundry, if it's a helpful act, you can write about it here and dedicate it to a 9/11 victim.
Twitter wasn't around eleven years ago, but today you can use your 140 characters to spread the love toward 9/11 victims and survivors. Right now #Honor911 is trending, and you can also see hashtags like #NeverForget and #911Memorial. Eleven years may have passed, but we can still spread the love in different ways.
