These days phones aren't just for calling and texting — they're also for bettering your life and pro-social causes! MTV Act has put together a list of apps that are handy, helpful, and truly smart.
+ Recovery Record
Recovery Record is an app dedicated to eating disorders. The app lets patients keep track of their eating and feelings, and stay connected with care teams. If they're struggling and slipping, it also allows care teams to get involved right away. People using the app can set goals for themselves, and they also listen to inspiring music, like Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper"!
+ Circle of 6
The Circle of 6 app won both the White House/HHS Apps Against Abuse Technology Challenge and the Institute of Medicine/Avon Foundation for Women End Violence @ Home Challenge. The app is designed to prevent sexual violence and get immediate help. If things get uncomfortable at a date or whatever, you can reach your friends — and a GPS will let them know where you are if you don't know. You can also reach emergency services.
+ Bully Button
Lots of people deal with bullies, and Bully Button wants to make sure you can get help asap. It allows you to send email or audio messages through texting, and you can very quickly reach your parents, friends or school if something isn't right. There are also emergency services available through the app, such as quick access to a suicide prevention helpline.
+ Positive Thinking
Positive Thinking is an app to help with mental health. If you've been feeling blue, this app supplies you with inspiring quotes and a beautiful interface. You can also upload and share your own quotes. Healthline.com honored the app by naming it in the list of "10 iPhone & Android Apps for Depression Patients 2012."
