"I don't think there's enough lyrical content anymore that, you know, that's positive in music today," T-Boz said. "It's very far, few and in-between at this point."
She does, however, like what J. Cole did with "Crooked Smile," which she and Chilli are featured on. The song "Crooked Smile" is all about J. Cole not succumbing to the pressure to fix his "imperfect" teeth. "I keep my twisted grill, just to show the kids it's real," J. Cole raps on the song. "We ain't picture perfect but we worth the picture still."
"He [J. Cole] wrote that very well, and it was meaningful and it helped a lot of people," said T-Boz. Some people have called it the rap version of TLC's song "Unpretty." "The song went number one. It [positive music] always can still win."
Chilli talked about the importance of using music to touch on topics people can relate to. "No one looks at themselves as perfect," she said. "And when you have songs like that that's telling you to embrace, you know, your imperfections because you're still amazing, it's so good and uplifting."
And these women def know a thing or two about putting universal topics into their music and videos.
