When Jenna Ushkowitz is on "Glee," she keeps her audience glued to the screen. Now she's asking her fans to glue themselves to the screen for another program — the documentary "Blackfish," which is about killer whales in captivity.
Jenna Tweeted:
Don't miss the emotional and chilling documentary, #BLACKFISH from CNN Films airing October 24 at 9pm ET on CNN #getinformed #savetilikum
— Jenna Ushkowitz (@JennaUshkowitz) October 22, 2013
The documentary focuses on the case of Tilikum, a killer whale (a.k.a orca) at SeaWorld in Florida who's been linked to the deaths of three people. Tilikum was born in the wild but was later captured. The first death he was involved in happened in 1991, followed by one in 1999. The third one occurred in 2010, when he killed a trainer in front of crowds of people.
In an article about all this, writer Tim Zimmermann, who worked with the director of "Blackfish," wrote, "Tilikum, before 26 years in marine parks . . . once knew what it was like to swim the ocean alongside his mother and family. And perhaps, just perhaps, that also explains why [trainer] Dawn Brancheau died."
Keeping killer whales in captivity is a controversial issue. People against it say it's inhumane, pointing to how small the tanks are --- in the film it is compared to humans being stuck in a bathtub their entire lives. Others say that keeping killer whales in captivity can lead to study and rehabilitation.
The doc has been getting rave reviews, and you can take a look at the trailer below:
