A refugee is someone who is forced to leave their home (possibly country) because of war or persecution. There are currently more than 43.7 million refugees in the world, and today is World Refugee Day.
World Refugee Day was started by the United Nations, and June 20 is about honoring and helping the people who have to escape from their homes. 80% of refugees are women and children, and each minute eight more people become refugees. MTV Act has put together a list of three ways you can lend a hand.
+ My Life as a Refugee
To give a better understanding of what it's like to be a refugee, the UN has created the game My Life as a Refugee. It's totally free, and you can download it on your iPhone, iPad or Android. This is no Farmville — this game shows you why people are forced to leave their homes, and what dangers they face no matter what they decide to do.
+ Change Your Profile Pic
Spreading awareness is always a biggie, and an easy way to accomplish this would be to change your Facebook or Twitter profile pic. This can open up conversations with your friends, because they might ask about the picture change.
+ Stay Updated
The UN Refugee Agency is inviting people to subscribe to email alerts to keep up with what's going on. You can choose if you want weekly updates, or if you'd like to get updates just about World Refugee Day. This will help keep you up-to-date with what's going on and how you can help.
