The Red Sox didn't beat the Philadelphia Phillies last night, but it was still a great night to be a Boston fan. The team invited Boston Marathon bombing victim Jeff Bauman to throw out the ceremonial first pitch from the mound to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
There were many images and examples of hope and solidarity in the immediate aftermath of the bombings, but one image stands out: Carlos Arredondo, in a cowboy hat, wheeling Bauman away from the scene. Arredondo used his belt to help stop Bauman's wounds from bleeding. The two had never met before the race; Arredondo was close to the finish line handing out American flags when the bombs exploded.
Although Bauman lost both of his legs, the cowboy hat-wearing stranger likely saved his life. The pair took the field together, with Arredondo pushing Bauman to the mound in a wheelchair. Arredondo even got the chance to throw a pitch of his own to Red Sox hitter David Ortiz. This is the first time the duo has reunited publicly since the Boston Marathon.
