I'm pretty sure the phrase "Beauty is pain" was first spoken in reference to high heels. I know this because, after a wild night out with my friends, my feet tend to have a worse hangover than my head does. But, outside of the ache from twerking all night, are high heels reallllly bad for us? It turns out they are. I'm talkin' to you, Lady Gaga!
I mean. It doesn't take a genius to tell that high heels aren't the healthiest footwear choice. Although people typically wear heels to feel taller, studies show that women who wear them daily for years have shorter calf muscles and thicker Achilles tendons than women who opt for flats. Heels also put extra pressure on wearers' knees, meaning that sexy stride may someday become an achy limp for those who wear them too often.
Now, I'm not saying you should rock sneakers with your fancy dress or ditch heels altogether. I'm just over five feet tall, and even in stilettos, have to stand on my toes to fix my lipstick in many bar mirrors. (What gives, Los Angeles?! Not all of us are supermodels!) Heels make women feel sexy, and confident, and if you're as short as I am, simply visible…but it's important to give our feet a rest.
Wear flats whenever possible, and save your highest heels for your hottest dates. Also, listen to your feet! Would you wear a hat that gives you a headache? No! The same goes for your shoes! It's 2013, and with so many footwear options out there, beauty doesn't have to be pain. Heels may be painful, but over 300 million children around the world have no shoes at all.
