Now that summer's here, many people who just graduated or are on vacay from school are looking for the dreaded J-word: a job. And since it's election year, there's plenty of talk about jobs going on because we all want to be gainfully employed and stuff. Young people might find it especially hard 'cause you know, "1 of 2 recent graduates are unemployed or underemployed." Luckily Nas is supporting an idea that might make a difference.
The Queens rapper tweeted the following:
Yo -- If you care about your future, check out OURTIME.org, an organization that stands up for young Americans.
— Nasir Jones (@Nas) June 19, 2012
If you head on over to OUR TIME, you'll see a petition asking President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney to make one million more jobs by "expanding national service," meaning jobs like teachers and nurses.
"A generation is a terrible thing to waste" the petition reads. Yeah, they're talking about us. OUR TIME is def concerned about young Americans, and wants us to promote more jobs and get really involved in voting so that candidates will hear our voices. There's a stereotype that young people don't vote, but we can prove that wrong, can't we?
There's also a video starring Usher (Swooooon!), Trey Songz (Double Swooooooon!), Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe and the always hilarious Larry David. "We have the power. The power is with the people," says Nas in the video below. "If I Ruled The World," indeed!
OUR TIME is also concerned about credit card and student loan debt. Get what we want now, pay later? Sweet! Except . . . the concept isn't so sweet if you can't handle your bills and get overwhelmed by debt. Thank you very much, fine print. That's why OUR TIME wants to call out companies that take advantage of young people and their money.
Jobs, voting, staying out of debt -- all sounds good, and we're the ones who make it happen. Yo, Nas and co. -- thanks for the good lookout on OUR TIME.
