It seems as though Johnny Depp is ready to take a break from his busy few years, and Warner Bros. is willing to comply. The studio has put his upcoming project "The Thin Man" on hold, reportedly so Depp can take some time off in between his films.
Deadline has the news, saying that "The Thin Man" was still in its early stages of production. The film had not yet been greenlit, and director Rob Marshall hadn't yet cast a female lead to act opposite Depp. The budget for "The Thin Man" had recently been submitted, but Deadline reports that there "isn't a big rush" to get the film to the big screen.
Deadline is also reporting that WB wasn't too happy with the lukewarm performance of "Dark Shadows" in theaters, and that that might have had something to do with "The Thin Man's" delay. The film's budget is reportedly over $100 million, which does seem a bit bloated for what the movie is about. "The Thin Man" was supposed to go into production in November.
This is actually good news for Marshall fans, as it will give the director time to get his planned "Into The Woods" adaptation to the big screen. It's no guarantee that that's where he will head next, but Deadline thinks it's likely that Disney will push him forward on that project since he's been working on it for a while.
Depp has had a busy few years, and has most recently been working on Gore Verbinski's "The Lone Ranger." Before that there was "Dark Shadows" and his quick cameo in "21 Jump Street," and then "The Rum Diary" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and voice work on "Rango." We understand his need for a vacation, and would rather have a well-rested, vivacious Depp in a movie than one who's exhausted and potentially phoning it in.
"The Thin Man" is based on the Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name. It follows a private detective and his clever young wife who are drawn into investigating a murder. The novel and its subsequent film adaptation were known for the witty banter between their main characters, so we're thrilled to see who eventually ends up being cast as Depp's onscreen wife.
