Got $234,900 lying around? Babies might look little and cute, but the price tag that comes with them sure isn't. A new report from USDA says that an average baby for a middle income family is going to cost them approximately $234,900 for the first seventeen years of the kid's life!!!
That already scary number jumps even higher if you take into account projected inflation -- then the price tag goes up to $295,560. And keep in mind that this only goes up to the age of 17, so it doesn't include the price of college. Ahhh! Higher income families are expected to fork over about $389,670 and lower income families are going to spend an average of $169,080.
These are approximate numbers, but they give you an idea of how kids don't come cheap. They need food, clothing, shelter, transportation, health care, you name it. Having a baby isn't just about carrying around a lil cute thing that looks kind of like you and your partner -- it's a big a$$ responsibility and it's going to be hard on your wallet. It's even harder when teens have kids because they're often still finishing school and figuring out jobs and life.
The good news is that birth control costs way less than $234,900 and you have lots of options about what kinds of birth control to use. Check out It's Your (Sex) Life to learn all about different kinds of birth control, from abstinence to condoms to the pill.
