Tom Cruise is a man with nothing to lose in this new still from "Jack Reacher."
His upcoming thriller is an adaptation of Lee Child's bestseller "One Shot," the ninth book in the "Jack Reacher" series. There have been 17 books in total, all centered around the titular ex-military policeman who became a vigilante drifter. In this film, he "finds himself drawn into the case of a sniper who randomly targets civilians."
Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official photo from the movie, and it turns out that the scene is not as calm as the still makes it seem. As a man without any possessions, the only item that Reacher can call his own is his 1970 Chevelle SS. Unfortunately, he's about to destroy it soon after this photo.
Apparently Reacher just beat the crap out of his formerly mint car while escaping from police. Wrongfully suspected of murder, he has managed to evade those who are chasing him in this scene and is sending his Chevelle rolling towards the bus and Sixth Street Bridge in the distance as a decoy. "It's a risky calculation," EW writes, "but Reacher thinks he knows where the cops will keep their attention."
"He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bulls–t that makes up our daily lives. He literally and figuratively has no baggage," director Christopher McQuarrie told EW about the character. "He is an extremely pragmatic, matter-of-fact person. He's very solitary, but he can't walk away from a situation that needs to be made right. His own sense of right and wrong tie into that situation and he can't leave until it's been resolved. That's his Achilles heel."
"Jack Reacher" hits theaters on December 21.
