Who's in the mood for a nice walk? Walk [Your City] is out there encouraging more people to get to places on foot, because it's good for your health and good for the environment, plus you might wind up with some extra social interaction. Urban planner Matt Tomasulo started up the project and has taken it to Kickstarter to make it bigger and better than ever.
Matt got his idea rolling last January with Walk Raleigh by putting up signs in his North Carolina hometown to let people know how far of a walk it is to get certain places. We've all heard the old: "It's too far to walk" line, so he wanted people to realize that sometimes it isn't as long of a walk as you might think. The signs were a bit hit in town but then had to be taken down because they were "deemed illegal." After community support, they were put back on! Phew! Bottom line, Walk Raleigh was an awesome success and a bunch of other towns got in touch with Matt, wanting to do the same thing on their streets.
So Matt's put together a website that lets you make your own signs to put up in your neighborhood. And to help fund this whole project, he's gone to Kickstarter, and he's already made more than the $5,800 goal. Matt doesn't seem to rest on his laurels so he expanded the goal to $10,000 in hopes of making multiple languages available in the sign "making" platform amongst other things. And he still has until April 29 before the fund ends! If you catch him strolling by on the sidewalk, you'll have to give him some props.
