FROM MTV MOVIES: The odds -- and the sweet, sweet money -- are ever in "The Hunger Games''" favor. Director Gary Ross' adaptation of the much loved novel from Suzanne Collins isn't just a critical darling, it's a huge commercial hit as well. "Hunger Games" once again topped the box office over the weekend, making it the reigning champ four weeks running. That's the first time since "Avatar" that any one movie has held the box office crown for four weekends in a row. Did I mention it's crossed $500 million worldwide, too? Not too shabby.
It's an impressive feat by any standards, but even more impressive considering the strong competition in "Cabin in the Woods," another Lionsgate picture; the Joss Whedon-penned horror comedy scored a third place finish worth $14.9 million. Just the mere fact that this movie is even in theaters is nothing short of a small miracle, since it's been delayed since 2009. Even if it didn't exactly wow the box office, it's doing a heck of a number on the viewers who've seen it, I'm sure. If you haven't yet, please, do go see "Cabin." It's so good.
