You know little book series and movie called "The Hunger Games" -- the one where kids struggle to survive on limited resources and have to battle out with each other in a crazy arena? Well, now it's time to tune into Water Games.
Did you know that every 19 seconds a child dies from lack of cleaning water? But you can help end this tragedy. From now until April 13, teens are putting their legs to the test and walking for water, as part of DoSomething.org's Water Games, Walk for Africa campaign. By organizing water walks in their communities, participants are building awareness around the need for clean water in developing parts of the world. If at least 15,000 young people walk the walk, a well will get built in Swaziland, Africa thanks to The Thirst Project.
The campaign has support from Willow Shields who played fierce Katniss Everdeen's sweeter, younger sister Primrose in the film. "In the movie, Katniss stands up for my character Prim. You can take a stand too," she explains in the video below.
Are you up for the task? It's simple. It's all about community, and you can do it right in your hometown. If you decide to organize a water walk of your own, not only will you be helping kids get access to clean water, you'll be eligible for some incredible prizes including a trip to Los Angeles to attend the Do Something Awards. Last year, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato represented at the awards ceremony. Who knows who will show up this year?!
There are five water walk categories. The Katniss Walk revolves around how many people your team can get signed up with DoSomething.org. The group that has the most visual impact will win the Cinna Walk. Whoever promotes the walk the best in their community will take home the prize for the Peeta Walk. The Gale Walk is all about who walks the farthest -- obvs. And, the team that incorporates an adult in the most creative way will rule the Haymitch Walk. But make sure your adult has, um, better balance than Haymithch. Plus, anyone who invites at least five friends to participate is eligible for a $2,000 scholarship. No matter which way you slice or dice it, everyone who plays this game wins.
