File this in the "boo-hiss" bin: "Avatar 2" likely won't hit its targeted 2014 release date.

In a new interview, producer and longtime James Cameron collaborator Jon Landau revealed that "2014 will be a tough date for us to make," despite previous indications that the two planned "Avatar" sequels would begin rolling out in that year.

"We're not naming dates," Landau told Empire. "To us, it's really about getting it right. 'Titanic' was supposed to be a summer movie, then it was a December movie. The first 'Avatar' was supposed to be 2008, and then it was 2009. You know, movies make release dates—release dates don't make movies. So we're going to get it right."

It's not the first time Landau has tackled the issue of the "Avatar" sequel's release date. And in fairness to him and Cameron, those guys delivered the goods with the first "Avatar," shifting release dates be damned. If it takes a little bit longer than expected for a stunning "Avatar" sequel, I guess I have to be I'm okay with it.

Besides, it's not like they haven't started working on the film yet, as Landau himself says. WETA and other core members of the "Avatar" crew are already knee-deep in development on the sequel, to the point that they're building structures, environments and exploring ways to shoot motion-capture underwater.

"It's going to be like the Floating Mountains in the first movie," he said. "It's not going to be all underwater; it's going to be a place we go to, leave and come back to."
